This video takes awhile to load give it time
The track meet was a CIF qualifier held at
Chaffey High School (1966) I have no idea what the bar was set at.
The pit was one of those "Cloud-Nine Air Pits". A
generator pumped air into it and kept it afloat. There was a foam
pad on the top so the vaulters couldn't puncture it with their spikes.
The advantage was that after the meet you could just unplug it and
the pit would deflate and you could roll it up and carry it into the
shed. The disadvantage was if you landed on a corner it would
spring you like a trampoline off onto the grass or track. Air pits
have gone the way of the dinosaur. |
